Yeah, I second the recommendations of the Bose Quiet Headsets... Have a pair of both the originals and the upgraded ones and both are pretty much just amazing.

The downside? You really need to remember to look both ways before crossing the street as you can't hear car honking even as they are running over you.

Bose Quiet Comfort II Noise Cancelling Headphones...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AP05BO/sr=8-1/qid=1152778386/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-4468463-6579856?ie=UTF8

They rule. I thought it was crazy to spend 3 bills on headphones until a coworker let me try is on a flight from Chicgao to Philly. I am not kidding - you arrive after a long flight feeling much less fatigued because it just washes out the engine noise. I wear eye shades as well when I fly. It turns lousy flights in to pleasant naps.

I like Sennheiser HD25 cans, they enclose REALLY well and go COCKING loud, with good frequency response. Good for studio + DJing, but just as excellent for walking down the street without hearing, well, much outside of them. Increased likelihood of getting hit by unheard traffic.

Other than personal recommendation, take a gander at:
